It’s great to see events hosted by private schools in Palm Beach that get the local community involved. Many times it seems that private schools allow too much of clique-type reputation. Unfortunately, this type of facade lends itself to leaving the community with a bad taste in their mouths. There are many families who don’t appreciate it when private schools in Palm Beach give off the impression that they are too good for the “common” people. Obviously, this is a bit detrimental, because they are many families whose children would greatly benefit from receiving a private school education.

That being said, it is nice to see schools like The King’s Academy holding events that are open to the public. This is a fantastic way for private schools in Palm Beach to reach out and make a positive impact in the local community. Most recently, The King’s Academy held an event called the ”5k Lion Run” and was open entry to anyone in the area who wanted to participate. TKA even went as far as certifying their course, hiring a professional race timing crew, and presenting awards to the winner of each division and the overall winners.

This is an exemplary effort by The King’s Academy to assimilate itself with the surrounding community, showing that it is a welcoming and caring place for all families. Private schools in Palm Beach should certainly continue to hold events that involve the community so as to move forward in the mending of the “cliquish” reputation that many currently have.

The following paragraphs briefly give a description of how The King’s Academy 5k Lion Run transpired. As mentioned before, this is the type of even that should set an example for other private schools in Palm Beach, no matter what the size of enrollment, to be proactive in reaching to the community with fun and high-quality events.

The King’s Academy’s 5k Lion Run held last Saturday at the school’s West Palm Beach campus was a success in every sense of the word.

The school’s newly certified cross-country course was enjoyed by nearly 200 registered participants ages four through 76. The morning began with a quarter-mile kid’s run around the track. After cheering the kids through the finish line, the 5k participants lined up at the start. Many of the runners commented that the course was challenging, well organized and clearly marked.

The King’s Academy is a nationally recognized inter-denominational, independent Christian school serving approximately 1,200 students from preschool through 12th grade, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Association of Christian Schools International and the Florida Association of Christian Schools.

The King’s Academy serves students and their families from across Palm Beach County at its main campus at Belvedere Road and Sansbury’s Way in West Palm Beach, and its satellite preschool campuses.

The Marching Lions band (who finished 2nd in the state in the A classification) is off to a good start again this year.  They’ve already qualified for the year-end state championship.  Mr. Eric Dunn, band director, and Mrs. Kimberlee Aliapoulios, assistant band director, lead them.  At their first competition they finished second in the AA classification against larger bands.  The theme of their show this year is “Aquaman” in which a superhero “saves the girl.”

On Saturday, October 17, 2009, The King’s Academy Marching Lions won their classification at Saturday’s band competition at John I Leonard High School.  Their score also beat eight of the seventeen larger schools competing in higher classifications.  This is a great accomplishment for the Marching Lions and proves that private schools Palm Beach can compete. The Marching Lions received superior awards for: visual, percussion and music, best general effect, music, woodwinds, percussion, visual, brass and an overall rating of superior and 1st in Class A.

In addition to winning their division for this competition The King’s Academy Marching Lions received some outstanding scores and recognition at previous competitions this year.

In a recent competition at Flanagan High School the Marching Lions made another impressive performance for private schools in Palm Beach.  The band competed in class AA to allow band members who are in choir the opportunity to audition for all-state choir.  The King’s Academy is technically not large enough to be in 2A.  The event organizers allowed them to move up into 2A and take our chances.  The Marching Lions took second overall in this competition with a total score of 69.98, coming in just behind Miami Coral Park who scored 75.27. This placement was out of 15 other public and private schools. The band’s score of 69.98 has qualified them for the State Championships in November!

In the competition prior to that one, The King’s Academy once again made a statement for private schools Palm Beach competitions.  At the Park Vista High School competition there were bands classified from A through AAAA. In this competition the Marching Lions placed 9th out of 18 competing schools with an overall score of 70.5.

The King’s Academy and their Marching Lions are doing great things and showing the private schools in Palm Beach can certainly hold their own.
